  1. Very thought-provoking article, Rebecca. Thank you for the trenchant thoughts and observations. I would agree that those at the top are being very short-sighted due to financial pressure. I work at an R1 in Florida in admin (Ph.D. in the humanities) and upper level admin has been quite cagey about how the fall will proceed. Our unit is able work almost entirely remotely so hopefully they will let support staff stay home.

    1. They must be under tremendous pressure not to look like they don’t have faith in your governor’s confidence that it’s safe to reopen. I am sure that is hard to navigate.

I think about all you those at “destination universities” (not that yours is, but Florida can be an attractive place to live) and what it will mean to have students coming in from all across the country in August and then again in January. And to have parents visiting throughout. That’s a lot of new germs to manage!

  2. Advice written with an amazing level of empathy towards students and the various challenges they may be subject to at these unusual times and a dose of straight talk to faculty who have a hard time accepting that they may not be perfect at everything!

    1. We’re often so hard on ourselves… perfectionists and overachievers. That’s often served many of us well–which is why it can be so hard to see when it won’t.

  3. Nicely written thanks. I am reading on an iPad. When reading on a laptop it looks like someone’s put malicious code in the page. Every time I load it it tries to get me to download a flash or norton virus update.

  4. It looks like you’ve misspelled the word “againt” on your website. I thought you would like to know :). Silly mistakes can ruin your site’s credibility. I’ve used a tool called SpellDoc.com in the past to keep mistakes off of my website.
